It all started with my sister’s postcard from the Steve Urkel fan club signed by Jaleel White (#90sKids). Apparently my inappropriate scribbling on important pieces of paper throughout the house had crossed a line, and my mom was sick of us fighting. Recognizing my propensity for handwriting, my mom bought me a broad-edge calligraphy set for Christmas when I was in 7th or 8th grade, so I could channel my youthful obsession into a lost art form.
Throughout the years, I dabbled on and off with calligraphy. I handlettered my sister’s wedding envelopes in 2008, and then did my own in 2016. However, I wasn’t in love with my lettering. I knew how to use a felt-tip broad-edge calligraphy pen, but it just wasn’t the look I was going for. Through an exhaustive Pinterest and Instagram search, I discovered modern calligraphy in January 2017. From that point forward, my fire for calligraphy has never waned.
I started Maiden September in summer 2018 as an Etsy shop - just to see if anyone would actually pay me to do their wedding envelopes. Shortly thereafter, I got my first sale! Throughout this time, I have learned and grown both as a calligrapher and as an entrepreneur. Now my passion for entrepreneurship is just as strong as my passion for handlettering.
As my business continues to grow, I have expanded my offerings and services; working with engaged couples, event planners, small businesses, brands, and individuals. I am proud to service clients regionally throughout Delaware, Maryland, Philadelphia, Southern New Jersey, and online nationwide. Maiden September is minority and woman-owned and LGBTQ+ friendly. I love working with creative clients from all backgrounds and walks of life!
My goal is to help you achieve the wedding/event/space aesthetic of your dreams through calligraphy. Drop me a line if you’d like to work together -- or if you’d like to schedule a quick call or meet-up for coffee.
